Using Social Media to Build your BusinessSo you have a business! Great! You’ve created a website, a Facebook page, you’re on LinkedIn and decided to jump into Instagram {or whatever platform you decided to go with}. Now what? How to use social media to build your business?
It’s important to start getting your business out there and you’re excited because you shared it with all of your friends and family, but is that enough? The answer is no. It’s not. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good place to start but you need to find a way to have your business be heard in this noisy world. So what do you do?

Let’s face it, it’s a different world that we are living in today. Marketing has changed because WE have changed! We are a world of immediate gratification and ADD thanks to Google and social media. Everything is at our fingertips, literally! When we watch our favorite TV shows, we are able to skip through the commercials if we want or we grab our phones and scroll through our news feed. “Scrolling” is exactly what we do! We scroll until something catches our eye and then we stop and scroll back up to see what it is. So, the question is…how do you get people to stop and scroll back up when you share information about your business?

One mistake that I see most often is businesses believe that the way to gain more customers is to sell them. They will post their product over and over with a call to action of “Buy Me”. I realize that the ultimate goal is to generate sales for your business, and if no one has told you yet, I’ll be the first…you’re doing it wrong! We don’t want to be “sold” anymore. We are constantly bombarded with being sold from our mail, email, digital ads that know exactly what sites we have visited it and tempting us to go back. It’s everywhere!! The part of this equation that is being missed is that before you can ask for the sale, you must first provide VALUE! Become the expert in your niche. This will encourage others to engage with you and allow you to build relationships and credibility.

In becoming the expert, we want our fans to engage with us. Let’s face it…it’s not about the reach, it’s about engagement! We want to build those relationships. Social media is a TWO WAY street! We want them to like, comment, share.

The Psychology of Why We Share:

  • It relates to us
  • To grow relationships
  • It’s entertaining or brings emotions
  • To support a brand or cause
  • It brings VALUE

Create content that fits one of the items above. I always give the example of being a fitness coach. I think it’s an easy Kathy Maio Phit Life, Using Social Media to Build Your Businessone to follow all of these above. Being a fitness coach should not just be about selling your product or service, it’s about sharing content that builds you as the expert in fitness. Share recipes, workouts, tips, transformations,  and the list can go on and on! There’s so much you can share to get your community to engage with you and consequently, become the one person that is thought of when someone thinks about creating a fitness plan. My friend, Kathy  with Kathy Maio’s Phit Life, does a great job of this on her Facebook pages!

Keep in mind that this process is not a sprint, it’s a marathon! It takes a lot of work to get people to follow you and to engage with them.  Social media is changing all of the time and new platforms are constantly be adding!  Keep your goals in mind, find ways to bring value, engage with your followers, be consistent and as a result, you
