It’s time we got real about lingerie and more importantly, who we are as women. Hidden Intimates is on a mission to help women look and feel beautiful!

Kate Sisk has always had a love for fashion long before her career at Anthropologie.  She dreamt of one day owning a boutique and in March of 2019, Kate made the decision to go after that dream. After investing a whole lot of research, hours and passion, Hidden Intimates was born.

Deanna: Kate, I couldn’t help but notice your Instagram page. That’s what got my attention. When I scrolled through the images, they looked like real women, not the typical lingerie models

Hidden IntimatesKate: Yes. They are all real women. They are our friends, people we know and I even got my mom involved!

Deanna: Oh wow! That’s great! I loved seeing the real women that you were using. Why did you decide to do that?

Kate: When you look at the largest retailer of lingerie, all of the models look perfect. We wanted to promote body positivity, so we decided to use real women as our models.

Deanna: How long did it take you launch?

Kate: It took 7 months to launch and 3 1/2 monts to establish a strategy.

Deanna: Were you nervous?

Kate: It just felt really right. There are some scary parts, debt, growing, sustaining the business, but I haven’t been scared. If I have to be scared, sometimes it’s because it’s worth it.

Deanna: What drives you?

Kate: What drives me is two things:

  1. Creativity and being creative. I like to create things. I always love fashion and photography. Able to use everything I like about being creative and share it.
  2. Women empowerment and having a voice to show women that you can just be you. We don’t need to photoshop you. You can wear whatever you want and making things more open to women in lingerie industry.

Deanna: When you decided to open Hidden Intimates, what was the biggest obstacle?

Kate: There wasn’t one big obstacle, it was during the launch and realizing there are so many moving pieces of business all of the time and there will always be something that goes wrong. But it’s ok because now that I know that, I can always have a plan B and plan C. My biggest obstacle is not getting stressed out over things that are out of my control.

For example, models cancelling or not showing up for the photoshoot or staying up until 5:30 am the morning of the launch because materials weren’t received for the website until 2 hours earlier.

Deanna: You’re so sweet and kind. When you have to have those tough conversations about what you are expecting and need, is that hard to do or can you switch that on and off easily?

Kate: I would say that my biggest personal career struggle is finding the balance between being softness and keeping others happy against the aggressiveness to get things done.  I really wasn’t good at speaking up. I had to learn to speak up at the following job and then people called her “aggressive”. At some point it felt that people were putting it back on me because they didn’t do what they were suppose to do and I had to tell them what we needed, and then I would feel bad. After I shared that with someone they said “If you were a man, nobody would  call you aggressive for asking where something was”

Deanna: When not working, what do you enjoy doing?

Kate: I play piano, guitar, and sing. Spend time with friends, family, travel. I’m actually going to Switzerland to celebrate my friends birthday!

Deanna: Have you ever been to Europe?

Kate: Yes, I have. I studied abroad in London and visited nearly 30 countries. I love to travel, it’s one of my favorite things!

Deanna: What advice do you have for someone who is thinking of their own business and is the early stages?

Kate: If it’s in the early stages, I’m sure they are probably scared to take that next step. Remember you’re not alone. I didn’t know this at first, but there is a huge community of small business owners and people like you…and others who want to support you. Don’t be afraid to reach out to help.

Deanna: As we wrap this up, what is your favorite music?

Kate: I like a lot of music but I would say the two artists that I can’t go wrong with are Bob Marley & Bob Dillon.  I can listen to them whenever, it never gets old with me.
