When I meet with clients about their goals, it’s more likely than not that those goals are big! I love it! I’m a big believer in dreaming big, that nothing is unobtainable if you truly want it and are willing to work for it.

When I met with one client not long ago, she shared that she wanted to be able to grow her side business to the point to where she was able to quit her 9 to 5 job and do what she loved all of the time. In the beginning, there is this burst of energy that you could clearly see the passion behind her drive to accomplish it.

The scenario above is honestly one that I’ve heard several times with my clients, which I guess is to be expected when I’m always talking about how important it is to “create a life you want”.  I love it! I love the passion and the energy of those first meetings, but I know what’s going to happen in the next few weeks.  Complacency, overwhelmedness, defeat.

So, what changed?

By this point, a few things typically come up.

  1. They shared their dream and goal with someone who either said verbally or with one of those smirks and eye-rolls that the goal was nice but not realistic
  2. It was self-served, meaning, that the “Dream BIG” part was heard, but the second part of that wasn’t…” plan small”.

What does dream BIG, plan small mean?

It means that I believe that no plan is too BIG! However, if you only look at those big goals and don’t make smaller goals in between, then you’re may never accomplish your larger goal. When other make comments or imply that your goal is not obtainable or when it seems you’re working hard but not seeing the results as quickly as you want, it’s easier to start buying into that “unobtainable” talk track.  when there aren’t smaller goals to keep you focused along the way.

When goal planning, keep those smaller goals in mind. Create daily or weekly goals to keep you on track. Practice habits that fit into that goal. If your goal is the same as my clients and your dream is to leave your 9 to 5 job, then create smaller goals along the way.

  • Look at where you are currently
  • Look at where you need to be
  • Create smaller action steps along the way to help get you there.

Obviusly, this isn’t just about your business (although it is when I’m talking about it most with others), it’s about anything in life. When I first got to Montana, I was in awe of how beautiful everything was. I had thought I saw mountains before while traveling through Pennsylvania and West Virginia, but they were nothing compared with the treasure that the west held. My first adventure of walking through what I called a “mountain” at first was less than my proudest moment. I mean, let’s get real, I’m an Ohio girl who loves my stilettos. I couldn’t even tell you the last time I had on tennis shoes.

As much as I loved the adventure, I was also really scared at certain points. I fall climbing the steps or crossing the street (true story) so all I could envision was me tumbling down the side, hitting rocks and trees on my way down!!

I loved the view though + the way it felt to be there, so I set a goal to brave one thing at a time. One small victory every time I go there and in time, the fear will be gone + the adventure even more present! What have you recently overcome that you broke into smaller pieces?
